In order to access the performing arts, people with sensory impairments need venues and companies to set up services such as captioning (CAP) and audio description (AD).
The See a Voice project was set up by STAGETEXT and VocalEyes, and ran from September 2006 to March 2010.
It was funded by the Treasury’s Invest to Save budget and Arts Council England’s Grants for the Arts programme to increase the opportunities for deaf, deafened, hard of hearing, partially sighted and blind people to attend performing arts events. This was achieved by helping venues and companies to offer good quality captioned and audio described performances at a lower cost and promote them to audiences.
The project worked with a range of venues across England to develop their front of house services and communication strategies as well as providing equipment and access to skilled practitioners.
At the heart of the project is the desire to have a lasting impact on the quantity and quality of assisted performances and, together with the online customer care training (www.savlearning.com), this online resource is a significant part of that legacy.
